Iraq urges citizens to flee violence in Syria

(AP) ? Iraq's government called Tuesday for all its citizens living in Syria to return home immediately to escape the escalating civil war after the recent killing of two Iraqi journalists covering the conflict.

Thousands of Iraqis fled to Syria to escape widespread sectarian fighting during the worst of violence in their homeland between 2005 and 2007. Now, the traffic is heading the other way, with Iraqis and Syrian refugees heading east, and out of the conflict that the International Red Cross just days ago deemed a civil war.

The U.N. estimated there were 1 million Iraqi refugees in Syria and 3,000 more seeking asylum as of January, the latest figures available. But Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh put the number much lower, at about 200,000.

Al-Dabbagh said Baghdad called on the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad and the opposition forces seeking to overthrow him to resist harming Iraqis who may be caught in the crossfire.

"They are not part of the conflict going on in Syria now," al-Dabbagh said in a statement. He cited a "rise in killings and assaults on Iraqis residing in Syria" and said 12 Iraqis have been killed so far this month alone.

Baghdad's urging came as Syrian government forces, backed by helicopter gunships, battled rebels in heavy clashes in Damascus over the past three days. The uprising against Assad broke out in March last year, and activists say more than 17,000 people have been killed.

The Iraqi government will pay for the costs of transporting Iraqis back from Syria, al-Dabbagh said.

Late Monday, the bodies of two Iraqi journalists killed in Syria were handed over to authorities at the al-Waleed border crossing, according to Iraqi Brig. Gen. Qassim al-Dulaimi.

Al-Dulaimi, an army commander in Iraq's western Anbar province which borders Syria, said the two journalists died in the Damascus suburb of Jaramana but it was still unclear when or how. There has been no fighting there over the past few days. He said cards from the Iraqi journalists' syndicate were found in their pockets, identifying them as Ali Juburi and Falah Taha.

The Baghdad-based independent Journalists' Freedom Observatory said Juburi was an editor of a weekly newspaper while Taha was a freelance reporter. JFO is warning Iraqi reporters not to travel to Syria.

Trying To Find Canary Birds For Sale - Pet Society

If you?re trying to get a pet that is both small and easy to look after then a bird could be the right choice. Birds are usually extremely social pets, and looked after within a good environment will talk and sing to you to maintain you company. A popular choice are African grey parrots though some people would prefer to search for breeders who have canary birds for sale.

Whether you prefer a canary bird or an African grey as a pet depends a lot on what you form of enjoyment you want out of your pet. A lot also will depend on how long you have to spend interacting with the parrot because it is an incredibly social creature.

Caring for an African grey parrot

Within all the different species of parrot, the African grey is one of the most intelligent, which also makes it one of the most popular. However, keeping a smart pet brings with it lots of responsibility, it needs a lot of stimulation, so you may need to supply it with plenty of toys, and for mental stimulation it requires you to interact with it a lot. And this tends to take a number of hours each day to keep it content and healthy. This is when it's going to learn how to talk. It is much better to look for breeders that have African Greys the sale as they would have been well looked after.

If you do not give them enough mental stimulation, there's an excellent chance they'll find a way to entertain themselves, but it may not be to your liking. It is also very important you regard them as just another member of the family.

Choosing a canary bird

In a number of ways Canaries are at the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to caring for them. They aren't keen being handled, and when they do stand on your hand, shoulder or head it may be an indication they really have confidence in you.

As they are very popular you can see a lot of canary birds the sale. The main reason for their popularity is that they are able to sing. You will also find that they come in many colours, and they are not as a lot of people think just canary yellow. You will find them in red, black, white and orange, along with other colours.

It won't matter if you happen to be searching for these pets, click these two links: African grey parrot for sale and buysellbirds.co.uk/business_listings/canaries-ct. Simply make sure you deal with a professional breeder or dealer.

Giant solar storm barrelling toward our planet no big deal, says space weather forecaster (+video)

In severe cases,?solar?storms can cause power outages, damage satellites, and disrupt GPS signals, but a US Space Weather Prediction Center forecaster says it will be 'a minor event.'

By Alicia Chang,?AP Science Writer / July 13, 2012

This image provided by NASA shows a solar flare, lower center, erupting from the sun on Thursday. Space weather scientists said there should be little impact here on Earth.

A?solar?storm was due to arrive Saturday morning and last through Sunday, slamming into Earth's magnetic field. Scientists said it will be a minor event, and they have notified power grid operators, airlines and other potentially affected parties.

The X1.4-class flare unleashed about 1 billion hydrogen bombs' worth of energy into space. Right behind it is a slower-moving coronal mass ejection, or CME, which is a belch of solar particles.

When strong CME's reach Earth, they can peel back Earth's magnetic layers, cause dazzling auroras, affect satellites in space and even fluctuate power grids.

"We don't see any ill effects to any systems," said forecaster Joe Kunches at the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado.

There's a bright side to stormy space weather: It tends to spawn colorful northern lights as the charged particles bombard Earth's outer magnetic field. Shimmering auroras may be visible at the United States-Canada border and northern Europe this weekend, Kunches said.

The storm began Thursday when the sun unleashed a massive?flare?that hurled a cloud of highly charged particles racing toward Earth at 3 million mph (4.8 million kph). It was the sixth time this year that such a powerful?solar?outburst has occurred. None of the previous storms caused major problems.

In severe cases,?solar?storms can cause power blackouts, damage satellites and disrupt GPS signals and high-frequency radio communications. Airlines are sometimes forced to reroute flights to avoid the extra radiation around the north and south poles.

In 1989, a strong?solar?storm knocked out the power grid in Quebec, causing 6 million people to lose electricity.

Juha-Pekka Luntama, a space weather expert at the European Space Agency, said utility and navigation operators "will certainly see something, but they will probably find ways to deal with any problems."

The storm is part of the sun's normal 11-year cycle of?solar?activity, which is supposed to reach peak storminess next year.

Elegant delivery: Sophisticated technique for delivering multiple cancer treatments may solve frustrating hurdle for combinatorial drug therapies

ScienceDaily (July 15, 2012) ? Cancers are notorious for secreting chemicals that confuse the immune system and thwarting biological defenses.

To counter that effect, some cancer treatments try to neutralize the cancer's chemical arsenal and boost a patient's immune response--though attempts to do both at the same time are rarely successful.

Now, researchers have developed a novel system to simultaneously deliver a sustained dose of both an immune-system booster and a chemical to counter the cancer's secretions, resulting in a powerful therapy that, in mice, delayed tumor growth, sent tumors into remission and dramatically increased survival rates.

The researchers, all from Yale University, report their findings in the July 15, 2012, issue of Nature Materials.

The new immunotherapy incorporates well-studied drugs, but delivers them using nanolipogels (NLGs), a new drug transport technology the researchers designed. The NLGs are nanoscale, hollow, biodegradable spheres, each one capable of accommodating large quantities of chemically diverse molecules.

The spheres appear to accumulate in the leaky vasculature, or blood vessels, of tumors, releasing their cargo in a controlled, sustained fashion as the spherule walls and scaffolding break down in the bloodstream.

For the recent experiments, the NLGs contained two components: an inhibitor drug that counters a particularly potent cancer defense called transforming growth factor-? (TGF-?), and interleukin-2 (IL-2), a protein that rallies immune systems to respond to localized threats.

"You can think of the tumor and its microenvironment as a castle and a moat," says Tarek Fahmy, the Yale University engineering professor and NSF CAREER grantee who led the research. "The 'castles' are cancerous tumors, which have evolved a highly intelligent structure--the tumor cells and vasculature. The 'moat' is the cancer's defense system, which includes TGF-?. Our strategy is to 'dry-up' that moat by neutralizing the TGF-?. We do that using the inhibitor that is released from the nanolipogels. The inhibitor effectively stops the tumor's ability to stunt an immune response."

At the same time, the researchers boost the immune response in the region surrounding the tumor by delivering IL-2--a cytokine, which is a protein that tells protective cells that there is a problem--in the same drug delivery vehicle. "The cytokine can be thought of as a way to get reinforcements to cross the dry moat into the castle and signal for more forces to come in," adds Fahmy. In this case, the reinforcements are T-cells, the body's anti-invader 'army.' By accomplishing both treatment goals at once, the body has a greater chance to defeat the cancer.

The current study targeted both primary melanomas and melanomas that have spread to the lung, demonstrating promising results with a cancer that is well-suited to immunotherapy and for which radiation, chemotherapy and surgery tend to prove unsuccessful, particularly when metastatic. The researchers did not evaluate primary lung cancers in this study.

"We chose melanoma because it is the 'poster child' solid tumor for immunotherapy," says co-author Stephen Wrzesinski, now a medical oncologist and scientist at St. Peter's Cancer Center in Albany, N.Y. "One problem with current metastatic melanoma immunotherapies is the difficulty managing autoimmune toxicities when the treatment agents are administered throughout the body. The novel nanolipogel delivery system we used to administer IL-2 and an immune modulator for blocking the cytokine TGF-? will hopefully bypass systemic toxicities while providing support to enable the body to fight off the tumor at the tumor bed itself."

Simply stated, to attack melanoma with some chance of success, both drugs need to be in place at the same location at the same time, and in a safe dosage. The NLGs appear to be able to accomplish the dual treatment with proper targeting and a sustained release that proved safer for the animals undergoing therapy.

Critical to the treatment's success is the ability to package two completely different kinds of molecules--large, water-soluble proteins like IL-2 and tiny, water-phobic molecules like the TGF-? inhibitor-into a single package.

While many NLGs are injected into a patient during treatment, each one is a sophisticated system composed of simple-to-manufacture, yet highly functional, parts. The outer shell of each NLG is made from an FDA-approved, biodegradable, synthetic lipid that the researchers selected because it is safe, degrades in a controlled manner, is sturdy enough to encapsulate a drug-scaffolding complex, and is easy to form into a spherical shell.

Each shell surrounds a matrix made from biocompatible, biodegradable polymers that the engineers had already impregnated with the tiny TGF-? inhibitor molecules. The researchers then soaked those near-complete spheres in a solution containing IL-2, which gets entrapped within the scaffolding, a process called remote loading.

The end result is a nanoscale drug delivery vehicle that appears to fit the narrow parameters necessary for successful treatment. Each NLG is small enough to travel through the bloodstream, yet large enough to get entrapped in leaky cancer blood vessels.

The NLG lipid shells have the strength to carry drugs into the body, yet are degradable so that they can deliver their cargo. And most critically, the spherules are engineered to accommodate a wide range of drug shapes and sizes. Ultimately, such a system could prove powerful not only for melanoma, but for a range of cancers.
