Fox's Ed Henry goes with squares to add flair

NEW YORK (AP) ? There's not a lot of room for Ed Henry to make a style statement. The Fox News Channel chief White House correspondent pretty much has to stay in the box that is your TV screen.

But in the buttoned up-world of TV news, he's figured out a way: pocket squares.

Blue ones, red ones, white ones. He'll wear red-meets-blue purple, too, but don't read too much into any political meaning, he says.

It all started as a friendly fashion competition with Ali Velshi, a former colleague when Henry was at CNN. It was all about the bigger, better necktie back then. There was an unending game of one-upmanship with more colorful shirts, perhaps even a patterned vest.

Still, Henry says, Velshi usually out did him ? until Henry pulled out the pocket square.

"The pocket square amps it up!" says Henry. He adds: "At least no one is teasing me about my makeup anymore."

There is a bit of ribbing about his fashion sense. A producer set up a Twitter account for Ed's Pocket Square. Sample tweet: "I hate when the TV graphics cover me and I don't get enough air time!"

Henry meets a reporter at the Brooks Brothers flagship store on Madison Avenue. The way he stands there at one of the glass countertops, opening his travel friendly pocket-square case and putting them on display, it looks like if things don't work out at Fox, there would be a position for him here. Customers pass by and look at him: One can't tell if they want to ask for his autograph or if the squares are on sale.

"I like pizazz. I like to show my personality ? any way I can," he says with a smile.

Most of his work day is serious business, and he doesn't want to distract from that. He travels the world with the president, reporting on stories and issues that affect the world.

But that doesn't mean he's a two-dimensional stuffed shirt: He has a wife, kids and, yes, an appreciation for a little flair in his fashion.

When he was following President Barack Obama to Martha's Vineyard, Mass., two years ago, he stopped in a store in Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and picked up a pocket square with a paisley print in ocean colors. He was covering the president's vacation, after all, and he wanted to look the part.

For black-tie dinners, he'll typically turn to his Tom Ford-designed black-and-silver one.

Henry's style rival Velshi, who calls his style "stock chart chic," says it can be a challenge to dress the way he likes when the news turns urgent or dire. "As a business reporter, it's also crucial that the dressing doesn't become about labels or money," he adds.

But dressing up is not a chore for Henry. He rather enjoys it.

"I never did the khaki-and-cotton thing. I like how they dressed in 'Mad Men,' and I think that dressing up is something that's coming out of the recession. People want to look successful," he says.

There's also the respect he offers to his job and the people he covers by putting on a suit, tie ? and pocket square.

Henry, 40, has been Fox's top White House reporter since 2011.

Henry and Obama have at times had a prickly relationship, but they can agree on style. Henry recalls interviewing the president in Moscow in 2009, and Obama taking the extra moment to comment on ? and compliment ? Henry's cufflinks and tie.

"The president has a real eye for detail," Henry says. "He's a great dresser."

Going around the globe, Henry says he picks up ties and pocket squares as souvenirs, and they act as a bit of a travelogue. His favorite is a tie he bought in Italy, where he was with President George W. Bush.

Running a close second is an Hermes pocket square decorated with little sheep. He wore that for his daughter's first communion.

He rarely shops for ties and pocket squares together, and it's his rule they never fully match. "I try to pull out the color of one and pick it up in the other. Wearing two solids is cheating," he says.

Oh yes, he says, he is indeed a shopper. He jokes that few things make him happier than a bargain at Century 21. "I can't say anything to my wife when she buys shoes."

Lately, he's been getting pocket squares as gifts, including the skull-and-crossbones square he received at Christmas from his sister-in-law.

Still, he'll buy a special one for the 2013 presidential inauguration ? no matter who wins this year's election. "I made a trip for a new tie for the January '09 inaugural, but the next inauguration will be my first 'pocket square inauguration.'"

Study: Wolverines need refrigerators

ScienceDaily (July 12, 2012) ? Wolverines live in harsh conditions; they range over large areas of cold mountainous low-productivity habitat with persistent snow. The paper suggests wolverines take advantage of the crevices and boulders of the mountainous terrain, as well as the snow cover to cache and "refrigerate" food sources such as elk, caribou, moose and mountain goat carrion, ground squirrels and other food collected during more plentiful times of year.

These cold, structured chambers provide protection of the food supply from scavengers, insects and bacteria. In addition, the refrigerated caches increase the predictability of available food resources, reduce the energy spent by females searching for food while in lactation phase, and decrease the time mothers spend away from cubs.

The paper appears in the current edition of the Journal of Mammalogy and was co-authored by Robert M. Inman of WCS, Audrey J. Magoun of Wildlife Research and Management, Jens Persson of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and Jenny Mattisson of the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research.

"People don't normally think of insects and microbes as being in competition for food with wolverines," said lead author Robert Inman of the Wildlife Conservation Society's North America Program. "But in fact, bacteria will devour an unprotected food source if that source is available."

Through an extensive literary review, the authors noted that wolverine reproduction is confined to a brief period of the year, and the lactation phase in females (February through April) corresponds to a period of low availability of food resources. Wolverines, which are opportunistic foragers, have adapted by amassing food caches during the preceding winter months when food is more readily available. Without the cached food supply or an unforeseen alternative (such as a winter-killed ungulate), early litter loss occurs.

Inman said, "Understanding why and how wolverines exist where they do and the various adaptations they have evolved to eke out a living will better inform population management strategies and conservation of the species."

Climate change will play a key role in management planning for the conservation of wolverines, the authors say.

In a study published in 2010, wolverine biologists demonstrated a relationship between the areas where wolverines exist (their distribution) and persistent snow cover. The first theory advanced was that wolverines must have deep snow available in springtime so that they can give birth to their small cubs in a warm, secure den. The newly released study suggests that other factors related to climate and snow pack, such as competition for food, may also be involved in explaining the limits to wolverine distribution.

Because of their dependence on snow pack, wolverines were recently listed as warranted for protection under the Endangered Species Act due in large part to the threat of climate change reducing distribution and habitat connectivity. The authors say that a deeper understanding of how and why wolverines use snow pack the ways they do is critical to understanding how climate change will impact survival and reproductive rates. "Shedding light on the specific mechanism of how climate will affect wolverines is important in order to know what to do to help them hold on," said WCS's North America Program Director, Jodi Hilty.

Inman and co-authors published a study in December of 2011 on the spatial ecology of wolverines in the Journal of Wildlife Management. This latest paper represents the second of several that will help to inform a conservation strategy for the species.

Detroit mom questions how daughter shot during hug

Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. pauses for a moment during a question about the death of Adaisha Miller, 25, of Detroit, this weekend as Inspector Lashinda Houser listens in the background at Police headquarters, Monday, July 9, 2012. Adaisha Miller was fatally shot early Sunday morning at the home of off-duty Detroit police officer Isaac Parrish. Police officials say Parrish?s department-issued handgun accidentally fired while Miller was dancing behind him with her hands on his waist. The gun was in a holster on his waist. Eddie Miller and Yolanda McNair talks about their daughter, Adaisha Miller, in Detroit, Monday, July 9, 2012. The contact that came when Adaisha Miller hugged an off-duty Detroit police officer from behind caused his gun to go off, fatally shooting her in the chest, the police chief said Monday, July 9, 2012. Miller was celebrating what would have been her 25th birthday Monday. Chief Ralph Godbee called her death a tragic, "unfathomable" accident. "We are profoundly sad at their loss," he said, referring to Miller's family. Godbee said the gun was in a waist holster made of soft material, which would have allowed the trigger to be activated. (AP Photo/Mike Householder)

(AP) ? The mother of a Detroit woman shot and killed while dancing with an off-duty police officer questioned Monday why he would carry a loaded gun at a party in his own backyard.

Police said Adaisha Miller was dancing with the officer early Sunday morning when she hugged him from behind. His gun, which was in a waist holster, went off, and the bullet punctured Miller's lung and hit her heart. She died at a hospital.

Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee described Miller's death during a Monday news conference as a tragic, "unfathomable" accident.

"Somehow, in the course of dancing with the individual to his rear and touching his waist, his Detroit Police Department-issued weapon discharged, striking Ms. Miller," Godbee said. "There is absolutely no indication that the officer placed his hand on his weapon at all."

Godbee implied contact from Miller appeared to have caused the gun to go off, but he stopped short of saying she pulled the trigger on the .40-caliber handgun.

The officer, 38-year-old Isaac Parrish, has been placed on desk duty while the case is investigated. There was no answer at his home early Monday afternoon. Godbee said Parrish is "very remorseful."

Miller was celebrating the weekend before her 25th birthday on Monday, said her mother, Yolanda McNair. She was invited to the Saturday night fish fry at Parrish's home by friends who knew him, McNair said.

"Why do you need a gun at your own house? Why do you need a gun at your own party?" she asked. McNair said she would be watching the police investigation closely.

Detroit police officers have the option of carrying their weapons while off-duty. The model issued by the department has a safety mechanism built into the trigger.

The Smith & Wesson M&P primarily was designed for police and military use. It does not have a safety switch, but the trigger has to be pulled back completely for the gun to fire, certified firearms instructor Rick Ector said.

Ector said that if properly holstered, the gun cannot be fired accidentally.

David Balash, a former Michigan State Police firearms examiner, said the investigation also should look at the gun's angle given that Miller was shot in the chest.

"What's going to be very important here is the angle of the entry of the wound to the victim (and) if there is in fact any gunpowder residue," Balash said. "I'm having a great deal of difficulty understanding how a weapon that's pointed at the ground can be turned literally 110 degrees minimum to be in an upward position to strike someone."

But Godbee said Parrish's waist holster was made of a soft, neoprene-type material, and it would be possible for the trigger to be pulled while the gun was in it. He also said the barrel direction typically would have been pointing down while holstered.

There still is "no justification" for her daughter's death, said McNair, 44.

"She didn't do anything wrong," McNair said. "She told us she was going to a party.

"I should have been baking my daughter her birthday cake."

The Wayne County medical examiner's office was to perform an autopsy.

Samsung Galaxy Tab not cool enough to infringe on iPad, according to U.K. judge

apple vs samsung, galaxy tab 10

U.K. Colin Birss ruled that Samsung's Galaxy Tab doesn't infringe of Apple's iPad design because -- Samsung's Galaxy Tab isn't cool enough to be confused with the iPad. Bloomberg has the quote:

The Galaxy tablets ?do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design,? Birss said. ?They are not as cool.?

Apple has called Samsung a copyist, alleging their manufacturing partner simply apes everything Apple does in an attempt to grow market share by being the most Apple-like of the non-Apple alternatives. Attempts between Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung CEO Choi Gee-Sung to negotiate a settlement have failed. Apple has since won some temporarily injunctions in the U.S. over patents.

Although Samsung has been going in different directions recently, it's undeniable they've copied Apple designs to a ludicrous extent in the past, though it's far from certain doing so was illegal, let alone the primary reason for their success.

The late Steve Jobs famously called Android in general "grand theft" and vowed to go "thermonuclear" on them in court. Tim Cook has been cooler but no less serious, saying Apple can't be "developer to the world" and that competitors need to invent their own stuff.

Samsung is a giant company that makes everything from tablets to phones to refrigerators. Refrigerators tend to look remarkably alike. I wonder if anyone at Samsung even though twice about their smartphones or tablets looking like Apple's? Or if they thought making them look alike was actually a feature -- a benefit to users? Did they even think Apple would sue over trade dress?
