Contour's new mount, watersports kits help bring its cameras with you in the water, snow or dirt

Image

As Contour continues to do battle with GoPro over the action-sport POV camera market, its latest offensive centers around prepackaged activity-specific mount kits that should make it easier for customers to pick one up and go. Also new is an all-in-one ContourRoam watersports kit that includes the HD camera and waterproof case that's capable of keeping it dry at depths of up to 60m. The mount kits include sets for skiers, cyclists, motorcyclists, hikers and an all purpose helmet mount kit. All of these are available starting today on the company's website and at select retailers, with the mount kits going for between $59 - $99 and the Roam Watersports kit for $249. We appreciated the Contour+'s sleek package in our head to head test with the Hero 2 last month and the addition of these packages should help it compete on price and ease of use right out of the box. The specific details are in the press release after the break and pictures of each set are in the gallery below, assuming your hobbies are exciting enough to merit recording, of course.

PROFILE: LeaseRunner | Multi-Housing News Online

Joe Buczkowski

By Keat Foong, Executive Editor

As the manager of a five-state portfolio of residential and commercial properties, Joe Buczkowski had found that it was ?almost impossible? to efficiently lease a collection of townhomes when his son was born. The process involved mailing out application forms, collecting deposits, conducting background checks, scanning the leases, mailing them for signatures?for every applicant. Since he could not find a website that would help him to perform these functions easily, Buczkowski decided to create his own.

The result is LeaseRunner, a technological solution that integrates application, tenant screening, lease signing and rent collection into one paperless, completely digital, online process.

One of the distinctive features of LeaseRunner, says Buczkowski, is its pricing model. Particularly suited for the independent property owner, manager or real estate broker, LeaseRunner has no setup, monthly, annual or even training fees. Users are not charged by the unit or property either. Rather, customers pay only for the services they use.

Background checks cost $30, eviction screening $12, and business screening $50. Lease documents, which are available for different property types and states, cost $15 for a batch. And rent payments via ACH bank debits cost $3 per payment. (Tenants can set up recurring rent payments via autopay.) Volume discounts are available for larger customers.

Unlike more established apartment software programs, LeaseRunner is built first to work with mobile devices?tablets and smartphones?rather than desktops, says Buczkowski. The program has a bold, bright and interesting Web 2.0 appearance, he says. ?Any leasing solution will need to work on mobile devices in order to be successful over the next 10 years,? says Buczkowski.

Digitizing the application, leasing and rent collection process saves substantial time for property managers or real estate brokers who have to drive to deliver and sign leases. Input error will also be minimized as forms will be pre-populated with data. Property managers will also save an enormous amount of time in lease preparation.

Of course, another benefit of digitizing the leasing process will be the paper?and energy and money?saved. LeaseRunner has calculated that it takes 39 pages to rent one unit (see illustration). This translates to more than 1.56 billion sheets of paper that are not used, or $796,413,150 in total cost saved by landlords nationwide. As it is, 184,075 trees are cut down each year to supply the paper used by the rental market, according to LeaseRunner.

Since it?s soft launch in August of last year, LeaseRunner has accumulated customers in over 900 cities across the United States, says Buczkowski. ?We have a turnkey solution to screen and lease any property type,? he says.

Synthetic stool a prospective treatment for C. difficile

ScienceDaily (Apr. 30, 2012) ? A synthetic mixture of intestinal bacteria could one day replace stool transplants as a treatment for Clostridium difficile (C. difficile). C . difficile is a toxin-producing bacteria that can overpopulate the colon when antibiotics eradicate other, naturally protective bacteria living there.

"A synthetic stool transplant has a lot of potential because we can control what goes in and we can alter, change, or modify it as necessary," says Elaine Petrof, an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at Queen's University and in the Gastrointestinal Disease Research Unit (GIDRU) at Kingston General Hospital.

Dr. Petrof and her collaborator at the University of Guelph, Emma Allen-Vercoe, believe that a stool compound made from synthetic or "purified" bacteria could significantly improve on regular stool transplants. It could eliminate the chance of transmitting an infectious disease through fecal bacteria; physicians could tailor the mixture so as to increase patient acceptance; it would be easily reproducible; and, it may appeal to both doctors and patients as a 'cleaner' therapy.

Dr. Petrof and Dr. Allen Vercoe, an anaerobic microbiologist specializing in intestinal bacteria, are working closely to develop such a therapy. The goal behind their synthetic stool project is to offer a single-dose remedy, putting an end to revolving-door hospital visits for patients with recurring symptoms. Currently, they are continuing their research before using it as a new therapy.

Dr. Petrof recently presented the project's preliminary findings at the Beneficial Microbes Conference in Noordwijkerhout, the Netherlands.

Acer Iconia Tab A510 review

We'll stop just short of quoting Top Gun here, but if it's speed you crave, these next thousands of words could have you emptying your wallet. How's that for an opening line? To be honest, it's been quite some time since any of us Engadget editors booted up a brand new device and immediately let loose a stream of expletives -- all expressing unbridled delight, of course. Such was the beginning of our meet-cute with Acer's Iconia Tab A510, the company's first Tegra 3 slate, and the second to ship with Ice Cream Sandwich.

Apart from that 1280 x 800 TFT LCD display, this 10-incher looks, feels and performs nothing like its predecessor, the A500. Turbocharged with that quad-core CPU and 1GB of RAM, this Android 4.0 tablet joins a crowded category with a generous 32GB in built-in storage and a reasonable $450 price tag to match. So, does that excellence lose its luster with more extensive use? Is your money better spent on any of the other umpteen tablets running ICS? Will the lack of a higher-quality display prove too much of a con for your exquisite tech tastes? Follow on as we probe the A510 for answers.
