Does Cold Calling Still Have Its Place In Today's Business World?

?

There are a lot of sales management teams that struggle with the idea of cold calling and may hesitate to adopt this method as part of their sales process. I often get asked whether I think it is viable in the modern world.

To this question I answer, "absolutely, without question." It is just a matter of the manner in which you carry out the cold calls. I think that is really critical to determining whether or not to adopt this process, as you cannot approach all cold calling in the same way. The days of the sales rep cold calling in an old-school kind of way, whether it is heavy-handed, manipulative or high-pressure oriented, don't work in the modern business world.

People usually know the old tricks, but it is also not a way that fosters an honest and open relationship between the rep and the customer.

There are some examples for when it does work, however, and this may include when a rep is going to sell a product or service in their locale. People are going to want to know who you are, so it is important to reach out to someone in this way.

Although social media has had a significant impact on the way that people look for products and services, there is still a need to reach certain businesses via a phone call.

Lawyer's offices, doctor's offices, CPAs, business owners and manufacturing plants are not going to have their purchasing agents looking up on social network sites for companies who have the associated product or service.

As much as we like to think that social media has become so pervasive in our culture that everyone is using it, people who are in charge of businesses are likely very busy and unable to devote time to looking on the internet while they are at work.

Cold calling is not dead, but the old-school methods of communicating with potential customers should not be practiced by salespeople. There are ways that companies can still cold call in an effective manner, like using the system taught by Resolution Systems. This brings lots of research, resources and elements together in order to make that first contact very positive, beneficial to the gatekeeper and helpful for bringing the representative closer to making a sale.

It is still a viable part of the sales process, but the way in which it is done has become more of an issue for both sales management teams and individual representatives.

People are just hesitant when they pick up the phone, especially since sales representatives do not have the best reputation. You have got to know your audience and you need to do a good job without being manipulative. Instead of calling people and treating them with the respect they deserve, some salespeople simply try to coerce the customer into buying something.

Some representatives that go to a lot of in-person, business-to-customer meetings, do not bring a business card due to the fact that it can provide someone with an easy out. They hear the value proposition and then simply ask for the card as a means of getting them out of their office.

Not bringing the business card makes them seriously consider the proposition, and helps to provide an innovative solution to a common problem. If you don't get the sale right then and there, it is not likely to occur at all. This is also the case for cold calling on the phone, as a repeat call is unlikely to garner success.

Lindsay Lohan Moving Out of Beach House After Stalking Scare

Storage trucks were seen at Lindsay Lohan's home today, as the actress has apparently decided that one run-in with an alleged trespasser is one too many.

"Lindsay's house is more accessible than Starbucks," a source tells E! of her Venice Beach townhome, which has become a magnet for gawkers (and stalkers) of late.

"People sit in lawn chairs with cameras out on the sidewalk. That's one thing, but the incident where the lunatic knocked on her door was the last straw."

Long story short, she's outta there.

LiLo Movin'

"It just got her thinking that she needs to move," the source says. "Lindsay contacted some real estate agents about properties that are gated and more secure."

In the interim, she's moved into the Chateau Marmont ... not a cheap place to live, but those Lindsay Lohan Playboy pictures netted her almost a mill. A mill!

So where's the resurgent star going to settle down when all's said and done?

"When someone makes a change like this (moving), it's natural for them to consider going back to their roots, and in this case, that would be New York."

Once her probation's over, look for a coast-to-coast move. Just a hunch.

Scientists lead in 3D mapping of human genome to help understand human diseases

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

Genome Institute of Singapore's (GIS) Associate Director of Genomic Technologies, Dr Yijun RUAN, led a continuing study on the human genome spatial/structural configuration, revealing how genes interact/communicate and influence each other, even when they are located far away from each other. This discovery is crucial in understanding how human genes work together, and will re-write textbooks on how transcription regulation and coordination takes place in human cells.

The discovery was published in Cell, on 19 January 2012. The GIS is a research institute under the umbrella of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).

Using a genomic technology invented by Dr Ruan and his team, called ChIA-PET, the Singapore-led international group, which is part of the ENCODE (ENCyclopedia Of DNA Elements) consortium, uncovered some of the fundamental mechanisms that regulate the gene expression in human cells.

"Scientists have always tried to understand how the large number of genes in an organism is regulated and coordinated to carry out the genetic programs encoded in the genome for cellular functions in our cells. It had been viewed that genes in higher organisms were individually expressed, while multiple related genes in low organisms like bacteria were arranged linearly together as operon [1] and transcribed in single unit," Dr Ruan explained. "The new findings in this study revealed that although genes in human genomes are located far away from each other, related genes are in fact organised through long-range chromatin interactions and higher-order chromosomal conformations. This suggests a topological basis akin to the bacteria operon system for coordinated transcription regulation. This topological mechanism for transcription regulation and coordination also provides insights to understand genetic elements that are involved in human diseases."

GIS' executive director Prof Huck Hui NG said: "This is an important study that sheds light on the complex regulation of gene expression. Yijun's team continues to use the novel method of Chromatin Interaction Analysis with Paired-End-Tag sequencing to probe the higher order interactions of chromatin to discover new regulatory interactions between genes."

"This publication describes ground-breaking work by Dr Yijun Ruan and his team at Genome Institute o Singapore," added Dr Edward Rubin, Director of the Joint Genome Institute in US. "They address the fundamental question of how communication occurs between genes and their on and off switches in the human genome. Using a long range DNA mapping technology called ChIA-PET, the study reveals in three dimensional space that genes separated linearly by enormous distances in the human genome can come to lie next to each other in the cell when it is time for them to become active. I expect this study to move rapidly from primary scientific literature to textbooks describing for future students the operating principles of the human genome. The ChIA-PET technology, that is the telescope used in this exploration of the human genome, is an innovative and powerful molecular technology invented by Dr Ruan and his collaborators."

The ENCODE is an ongoing project which was awarded to Dr Ruan's team by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), an institute belonging to the National Institutes of Health (NIH, USA). The project was set up in 2003 with the aim of discovering all functional elements in the human genome to gain a deeper understanding of human biology and develop new strategies for preventing and treating diseases. So far Dr Ruan's team has received over US$2 million towards this project.

Diddy Aims To Bring A 'New Energy' To Cable TV

'We're coming with something that people are going to want to tune in to see,' Diddy tells MTV News.

Diddy alert! The music mogul isn't making an official announcement concerning his upcoming music-themed cable channel, but when the time is right, you can bet that his patented Diddy swag will be in full swing.

"I haven't made that announcement yet. That's something that kinda leaked to the press," the Bad Boy CEO told Sway on Sunday in Miami while on a break from shooting French Montana's "Shot Caller" remix video.

Broadcasting & Cable originally broke the news January 23, citing unnamed sources. It was reported that Puff hooked up with former MTV programming chief Andy Schuon to develop Revolt, a network aimed at African-American audiences, set to launch in December. Diddy couldn't confirm any of the information, however.

"When I have everything officially solidified, I'll be able to speak on it more. Only thing I can say is, we're coming with a new energy, we're coming with something that people are going to want to tune in to see," he said.

Diddy went on to cite the influence that Viacom networks MTV and BET have had on his career. "We want to give thanks to MTV and BET for paving the way," he said. "Somebody had to bubble, somebody had to come up out of the grind of working with the greats over at MTV and BET, and I thank y'all for all the support. MTV gave me my first shot, made me a global star."

Earth's 'missing energy' not lost after all

Scientists have determined that Earth's "missing energy" isn't missing after all.

Earth's primary energy source is the sun, which bombards the planet with solar rays every day. This energy helps drive our weather system, makes the planet warm enough for life and drives photosynthesis in plants, among other things. But not all of this energy is retained by the Earth ? some of it is reflected or radiated back into space.

By studying the amount of solar energy absorbed by the atmosphere, and comparing it to the energy released back into space by the planet, a team of researchers has calculated how much energy is retained by the planet. Most of the energy is held within the oceans as heat; the influx causes a slow rise in temperature.

Missing or not?
A previous study, released by a different group in 2010, noted that the ocean heating from 2004 to 2008 seemed to slow. This led them to suggest that some of the planet's energy was missing.

But the new team, led by Norman Leob of NASA's Langley Research Center, re-examined the numbers measured over the course of the last decade and found them to be relatively stable.

Loeb's team maintained that the margin of error was larger than the original study took into account.

"One of the things we wanted to do was a more rigorous analysis of the uncertainties," Loeb said in a statement. "When we did that, we found the conclusion of missing energy in the system isn't really supported by the data."

Looking for what was lost
Using a decade's worth of data collected by the Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE), the team determined the amount of energy absorbed from the sun. They then subtracted the energy reflected back into space, as well as the energy emitted by the Earth, using the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES).

The energy left over is trapped somewhere on Earth. Less than 10 percent of it heats the land and atmosphere, and melts snow and ice, while the rest heats the ocean.

The original study found that the Earth's temperature, which had been steadily rising, slowed its pace. But the new study notes that the methods for measuring characteristics of the ocean shifted in 2003.

    1. Library?putting the 3-D back into century-old photos

In a cool new undertaking, the ever-forward-thinking New York Public Library has pulled together a vast collection of roughly 100-year-old archival images for a very clever proto-3-D project.

    4. Camera-nabbing leopards caught on video

When accounting for the margin of error of both methods employed, the new study states that the apparent decline is "not statistically significant, nor is it observed by CERES."

Currently, data on the ocean is collected via the Argo program, which has dropped more than 3,000 floats in saltwater around the world. As the floats sink and rise, they measure the temperature and salt content of the water up to a depth of 1.25 miles (2,000 meters).

"Our data show that Earth has been accumulating heat in the ocean at a rate of half a watt per square meter (10.8 square feet), with no sign of a decline," Loeb said.
